Author’s note: Ditto on the spoiler issue…all the best parts I had written already were spoilers, so here’s a really small excerpt with all the spoilers pulled out:

“Holy cow, Abby, my credit card!”

“What about it?”

“I don’t have it.” Rach smashed her face onto the glass window and put her hands around it, looking. “It’s still in there.”

“We have to get it out!”

“How? We got in with the credit card. They’re going to know we were in there.”

“It doesn’t have your name on it, though. Maybe they won’t realize it’s yours.”

She tore her face away from the window. “It says Kylie Cunningham. I think even an idiot like Aaron will be able to match our names. Maybe if it was my mom’s and had a different last name on it.” She looked back again. “What are we going to do?”

I turned the doorknob and pushed the door, trying to jimmy it open, even though I knew it would never work. You never know when or where a miracle will occur though, so I figured it was worth a try. Now we were going to be in mucho trouble. Can you get kicked out of camp for breaking into the office and looking in private folders? Probably. Car would be laughing tomorrow when I got kicked out.

“Hey, wait, I have an idea. Give me your cell phone.” Rach held her hand out.

“We’re not supposed to bring cell phones to camp,” I reminded her.

“Yeah, well I saw you texting Sam the other day, so I know you have it, so give up the innocent act.”

I pulled my phone out of my pocket and handed it to her.

“What’s the number? 1-906-what?”

“It’s in there.”

She looked up at me with one of those disgusted looks of hers. “You have camp’s phone number programmed into your phone?” I nodded. “That’s a little too ‘dean’s kid’ for me.”

“Just do whatever it is you’re going to do, and let’s get out of here.” I didn’t want to be there any longer than necessary in case Aaron got insomnia and decided to wander to the office to catch up on paperwork or something.

Rach punched in buttons, then held the phone up to her ear. The phone inside the office started ringing.

“Are you crazy?” I snapped. “There’s an extension in the manager’s cabin. You’re gong to wake up Maura.”

Rach rolled her eyes. “Do you really think Maura would do something helpful like keep a phone in her cabin so people could get a hold of her for emergencies?”

“Mr. LaBoyer did.”

“Yeah, well, he had a whole brain, and Maura only has half of one.”

Sure enough, four rings later, the answering machine in the office picked up. I could hear Aaron’s recorded voice clearly through the glass partition. “Hello. You have reached Camp Spirit Christian Institute. Please leave a message, and we will get back to you as quickly as possible.”

Rachel cleared her throat as it beeped. “Yes, hello, this is Kylie Cunningham.” She raised her voice a little and spoke quickly and confidently. “I dropped my step-daughter off at your camp on Sunday, and I just realized this evening that I’m missing my credit card. I’ve looked everywhere in my house and before I cancel it, I thought I’d make sure I didn’t drop it at camp. I was hoping maybe some honest person had turned it in to the office or something. Anyway, if you happen to find it, please call me back.” Rach left a phone number and hung up my phone.

“Do you think that will work?” I asked, putting the phone back into my pocket.

“Hope so. Otherwise, we’re pretty much screwed. Well, I am anyway. Nobody would know you were with me.”

“No way. I wouldn’t let you take the fall on your own.”

“Well, you should.”

“I wouldn’t though.”

“Come on. Let’s get out of here.”
